This
question is as old as the existence of humanity itself. Man from time
primordial, has wondered and pondered upon the meaning & purpose of life.
There have been instances where people have spent life time trying to
understand the purpose of life. Then there are the ones who have abandoned
everything they had and went in search of their life’s calling. Saints having
meditated for years together. Monks who have spent years in forests, in solitude
far away from the human contact. On pilgrimages, on religious expeditions,
spiritual conquest and what not. Articles,
books and scriptures upon scriptures and yet we still don’t exactly know the
answer.
The
universe is so vast, billions of stars just in our own galaxy and a billion
galaxies like our galaxy, the “Milky Way”. All possibly making up, a trillion and trillions of stars. All of this
cannot be possibly for no reason. God
does not play dice, the thought that all of this came out without a reason
with just a Big Bang does not suffice enough. The order of the universe is not destruction, it is creation. If
you leave a piece of land unattended for years, you will find all kind of
plants, vegetation, animals; virtually a whole ecosystem created. This proves
that all of this nature, universe have a reason to exist and then we too must
have a reason.
So
what is that reason for existence of mankind? If you ask me, what it is? My
answer would be “I don’t know”. And no
one would probably know. With the universe being so vast, we are not even equivalent to speck of dust.
We in our tiniest existence how can we comprehend the universe so vast. When we
keep looking for answers outside of ourselves, the infinite possibilities can
easily overwhelm us. How can we just accept the claims of people having
understood life? Can there be not a
teeny tiny possibility of them being wrong.
Then
what do we do? How do we know? Should we even try to understand the meaning
& purpose of life?
A
possible answer for this is to “turn
inwards”. We should stop looking outside of ourselves, outside the universe
is so vast, and when we turn inwards it is only ourselves.
Only you!
I mean we ourselves can answer the question for only ourselves. When you turn
outside and try to explain it to others, it will lose all the meaning. It makes
meaning only to you and it has to only for you. Cause everyone is unique, with
their unique set of experiences, situations and circumstances in life; and with
a unique purpose in life.
The
universe speaks for itself to each one of us. The purpose of our life is embedded into our soul, into our
subconscious. When we sow a seed for tomato plant, we get tomato and not chillies. And when we sow seed for chillies, we don’t get tomatoes. The purpose
of our lives is en-grained in to our souls.
We
need not abandon everything and go in search of it because it is not available
outside of us. We need to turn inside and seek answers from within ourselves.
All we need to do is take a break from this fast paced life now and then to
have a moment of “self reflection”.
To
analyze and evaluate ourselves, so that we have a realisation of where we are
heading towards in our lives. Is it what we really want? What do our dreams
say? What does our passion say? What does our heart say? What does our
intuition say?
As Rumi, as famous poet says, “Everyone
has been made for some particular work, and the desire for that work has been
put in every heart”
All
we have to do is a truthful “self
contemplation”. The answer lies within. And it is not a one answer for all.
Everyone is unique and their purpose is still uniquer.
The
way of life is it communicates and directs us own its own accord. We just have
to break down the walls, boundaries, prejudices and biases we have built
against it.
In
a contrasting way, we can say the purpose of life is not to search for one. The purpose is to seek purpose and meaning “through
action”. Be courageous enough to follow your heart. Take the first steps;
we need to give the initial push ourselves, in the direction of our souls
calling. Trust in the universe; trust in the supreme as we move in auto pilot
mode, just giving an occasional steer now and then.
“The answer is already seeking you;
the question is do you or not seek the answer”
